Hospiten Santo Domingo
A private hospital in the capital from the international Hospiten group, with 24-hour emergency care
About Hospiten Santo Domingo
Hospiten Santo Domingo is the capital's branch of Hospiten, the Spanish private hospital group that also runs Hospiten Bávaro in Punta Cana. It is located on Avenida Alma Máter at the corner of Avenida Bolívar in the La Esperilla area, central to Gazcue and Naco and roughly 15 minutes by taxi from the Zona Colonial in normal traffic. From Boca Chica or Juan Dolio, allow 40 minutes to over an hour depending on traffic.
The hospital offers 24-hour emergency care, hospitalization, imaging and a clinical laboratory. Its official page lists 60 beds, including 16 intensive care beds, four operating rooms, 48 consultation rooms and 17 emergency bays, and more than 30 specialties from cardiology and cardiovascular surgery to neurosurgery, orthopedics, pediatrics and obstetrics. That makes it suitable for most tourist emergencies, from fractures and serious infections to cardiac problems.
For travelers: the Hospiten group has an international patient service, and the Swiss embassy's December 2025 doctors' list notes that Hospiten doctors accept local and some international insurance. Call your insurer's assistance line before non-urgent visits so they can arrange a guarantee of payment, and ask the hospital about direct billing when you arrive. Card and cash payment are accepted for those paying out of pocket. If you need English, ask for it at reception; it is not guaranteed for every doctor.
Contact: the main switchboard is +1 809-541-3000, with appointments on extension 2. The hospital lists santo.domingo@hospiten.com as its email. In an emergency, the Dominican Republic's national emergency number is 911.
When to use it: if you are staying in the city or the Zona Colonial, this is one of the most convenient private hospitals. For cardiac and advanced diagnostics, compare CEDIMAT. Beach travelers in Boca Chica or Juan Dolio with minor issues should start with the resort doctor, then come into the city for anything serious.
