The capital's beaches, from Boca Chica's shallow lagoon to the long Juan Dolio coast, all close to Las Américas airport
Santo Domingo is the one place in the Dominican Republic where a beach day and a city break fit in the same trip. Boca Chica, a reef-protected lagoon about 10 minutes from Las Américas airport (SDQ), is the closest swimming beach to the capital and the busiest on weekends.
Further east, Juan Dolio and Guayacanes trade the crowds for a longer, quieter coastline lined with condo towers, local fish shacks and a handful of all-inclusives, while Playa Caribe draws surfers. West of the city, Najayo and Palenque in San Cristóbal are where capitaleños go for fried fish and a local Sunday. The city's own Malecón beaches, Güibia and Montesinos, are for walking, not swimming.
Sargassum reaches this coast in some summers, so check recent conditions before you go.
