Zona Colonial
Santo Domingo's UNESCO-listed old town, the best city base for beach day trips east and west
About Zona Colonial
The Zona Colonial is the old heart of Santo Domingo and the oldest European-founded city in the Americas, laid out by the Spanish in the 1490s and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990. It is not a beach area, but it is the base most travelers choose for a Santo Domingo stay, and every beach in this region is a day trip from here: Boca Chica in about 30 to 40 minutes, Juan Dolio Beach in about an hour, and Playa Najayo and Playa Palenque to the west in about an hour.
The district is compact and walkable. Its grid of cobbled streets holds the Catedral Primada de América, often called the first cathedral in the Americas, the Alcázar de Colón (the palace of Columbus's son Diego), the Fortaleza Ozama, and Calle Las Damas, one of the oldest streets in the New World. Parque Colón and Plaza de España are the social hubs, ringed by cafés, rooftop bars and restaurants. In the evening the plazas fill with locals, music and tourists, and the whole area feels lively without being rowdy.
Where to stay: boutique hotels in restored colonial houses, mid-range chains and plenty of apartment rentals. Many have courtyards or rooftop pools, which you will appreciate in the afternoon heat. Expect street noise near the main plazas on weekend nights.
Beaches from here: the city's own Malecón beaches, Güibia and Montesinos, are a short walk but are not for swimming. For a swim, take a taxi or ride-hail car east to Boca Chica. Los Tres Ojos, a cave park with underground lakes, is on the way, and the La Caleta dive park is near the airport.
Practical notes: Las Américas airport is about 30 to 40 minutes away depending on traffic. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the easiest way around the city; agree fares before getting into street taxis. Keep normal city awareness at night and on quieter streets.
Best for: history and culture lovers, food travelers, people combining a city break with beach days, and anyone flying into SDQ who wants more than a resort.
