Boca Chica
The busy beach town closest to Las Américas airport, built around a shallow lagoon
About Boca Chica
Boca Chica is the beach town of Santo Domingo, a short hop from Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) and around 30 to 40 minutes from the Zona Colonial. Life here revolves around Boca Chica, a shallow, reef-protected lagoon where the water stays waist-deep a long way out. The town behind it is compact and walkable: the main drag, Calle Duarte, and the streets toward the beach are packed with small hotels, apartment rentals, bars, pizzerias, fish fry stalls and colmados (corner stores).
The character is local and lively rather than polished. On weekends and holidays the beach fills with families from the capital, music plays from every cooler, and vendors work the sand selling fried fish, coconuts and boat rides. Weekday mornings are calmer. Nightlife exists, centered on bars along Calle Duarte, and it has a reputation that some travelers will find seedy; families tend to prefer staying near the beach clubs at the east end or in a resort.
Where to stay: the big name is Santo Domingo Bay Convention Resort & Casino, the former Be Live Hamaca, which reopened in December 2025 after a full renovation and anchors the east end of the beach. whala!bocachica, the former Don Juan Beach Resort, is the budget all-inclusive in the middle of town. There are also dozens of small guesthouses and condo rentals; read recent reviews carefully, since quality varies widely.
What to do: wade or take a boat to the islets of La Matica and Los Pinos, eat at the beachfront fish shacks, and dive the La Caleta underwater park a few minutes west, which has a scuttled wreck at about 18 meters. The capital's sights are a short taxi ride away, so Boca Chica works as a beach base for a city trip.
Trade-offs: crowds on weekends, sargassum in some summers (2023 and September 2025 were bad), and a beach that is more about convenience than beauty. If you want a quieter base, Juan Dolio is about 30 minutes further east.
Best for: layover travelers, families with small kids who want calm water, budget travelers and anyone who wants the beach close to the airport and city.
