Diving La Caleta Underwater Park

About This Activity

Parque Nacional Submarino La Caleta is the dive site most people mean when they talk about diving near Santo Domingo. The protected area covers about 10 square kilometers of coast between the Las Golondrinas cave and Punta Caucedo, right beside Las Américas airport and a few minutes west of Boca Chica. It was among the first underwater national parks in the region, created in 1984.

The headline dive is the Hickory, a ship that researchers scuttled in 1984 to create an artificial reef. It sits upright on sand at about 18 meters (60 feet) and is now heavily covered in coral, with fish living in and around the hull. That depth suits Open Water divers on a guided dive. Deeper wrecks include El Limón and Capitán Alsina at about 30 meters and Don Quico at about 58 meters, which is technical-diving territory. The seabed drops in three terraces, and the karst rock hides caverns and tunnels, some over 100 meters long. Reef life includes grouper, rays, pufferfish, octopus, turtles and invasive lionfish.

Conditions vary a lot. Water temperatures run around 27 to 29°C (81 to 84°F) in the warm months, so a thin wetsuit or shorty is enough. Visibility is the wild card: logs from late 2025 range from under 2 meters to about 21 meters, depending on swell, rain and runoff. Calm, dry periods are best. Ask your operator about recent visibility before booking, and be flexible on the day.

How to book: dive operators in Boca Chica, Juan Dolio and Santo Domingo run boat trips to the park, typically as a morning two-tank outing, and many offer try-dives and certification courses. Prices vary by operator and package, so compare quotes and confirm that rental gear, park fees and transport are included. Bring your certification card and logbook. Do not fly within 18 to 24 hours of diving; plan your dive day early in the trip if you are flying out of SDQ.

Best for: certified divers, beginners wanting a first wreck, and travelers staying at Boca Chica or Juan Dolio. Snorkelers are better off with the shallow islets at Boca Chica, which do not need a boat.
