Master of the Ocean
Cabarete's free, multi-sport watersports championship, with surf, kite, windsurf and paddle events on one beach
About This Event
Master of the Ocean is Cabarete's signature watersports event and one of the longest-running in the Caribbean. The idea is unusual: instead of a single discipline, competitors are tested across several ocean sports, traditionally including surfing, kiteboarding, windsurfing and stand-up paddle, to find the most complete waterman or waterwoman. Over the years the format has added team competitions, but the spirit remains the same: a few days when the whole town gathers on the beach to watch.
The 2026 edition, the 21st, runs from September 16 to 20, 2026, in Cabarete. It was officially launched in June 2026 at an event hosted by the German Embassy, and the organizers have confirmed that public access is free. Earlier editions were held in late February, so if you are planning for future years, check the dates each year rather than assuming the same month.
The heart of the event is Cabarete Beach and the surrounding spots. Surf heats depend on the swell, so they may run at Encuentro Beach or other breaks, while the kite and windsurf rounds use the afternoon wind in Cabarete Bay. Expect a schedule that shifts with conditions: organizers pick the best window each day, and announcements are made on the beach and on social media.
For spectators, it is an easy and fun few days. Watch from the sand or from beachfront restaurants, many of which become informal viewing decks. Evenings usually bring music, parties and prize ceremonies around town. Families are welcome, and kids enjoy seeing the action close up.
Practical tips: book accommodation early, since rooms in Cabarete fill up around the event, and expect busier restaurants and traffic on the main road. Bring sun protection and water, and be ready for the afternoon wind. September is also part of the hurricane season, so keep an eye on the forecast; event schedules can change if a storm system passes nearby.
Who it is best for: water sports fans, anyone already in Cabarete that week, and travelers who want to see the town at its most lively. If you are learning to kite while you are here, see our guide to kitesurfing lessons in Cabarete, and ask your school how the event affects the beach schedule.
