Kitesurfing Lessons in Cabarete
Learn to kite on one of the Caribbean's most reliable wind beaches, with IKO-certified schools on the sand
About This Activity
Cabarete is one of the best places in the Caribbean to learn kitesurfing, and most of the action happens at Kite Beach, about 2.5 kilometers west of town. The combination works for beginners: steady afternoon trade winds, a reef offshore that keeps the inside water relatively flat, warm water year-round, and a strip of established schools on the beach with gear, rescue boats and certified instructors.
A cluster of schools works at Kite Beach and on Cabarete Beach, and many are affiliated with the International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO). Look for IKO or similar certification, radio helmets, and a rescue boat or jet ski on standby. Freelance instructors on the beach may offer cheaper lessons, but if they are not tied to a school and the price looks suspiciously low, they are often not certified.
How lessons work: most people need around 9 to 12 hours of instruction to become independent. Day one usually covers safety, wind theory and flying a small trainer kite on the beach, then body dragging in the water. Later sessions move on to water starts and riding. Schools sell single hours, but a three-day beginner package of around 9 hours is the standard way to learn. Private lessons progress fastest.
Prices are approximate for 2026: expect roughly $75 to $90 per hour for a private lesson with an IKO instructor, with group rates lower per person, and about $280 to $350 for a three-day introductory course. Some schools offer short trial sessions from around $50. Gear rental for independent riders is priced by day or week. Always confirm what is included, such as gear, boat support and certification card.
Wind timing: the breeze typically builds from around midday and blows until close to sunset, often in the 15 to 25 knot range on good days. The most reliable months are June to August, with another strong window from December to April. Autumn, from about September to November, has lighter, less consistent wind and is also hurricane season. Mornings are for theory, yoga or surfing at Encuentro Beach.
What to bring: rash guard, reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses with a strap and patience. Wing foiling is also taught at many of the same schools if kiting does not appeal.
Who it is best for: active travelers aged around 12 and up, couples and friends learning together, and returning riders who want reliable wind. Who it is not for: anyone who wants a quick, guaranteed thrill in an hour; it takes several sessions before it clicks. Stay in Cabarete to walk to the schools.
