El Morro Hike & Boat Tour

Climb to the El Morro lookout, then circle the mesa by boat to Isla Cabra

El Morro Hike & Boat Tour

About This Activity

El Morro is the reason Montecristi is on the map, and the best way to see it is from two angles: from above, on foot, and from the sea, by boat. Done together, the walk and the boat ride make a half-day that shows you the mesa, the coast of Parque Nacional Montecristi and the little cays offshore.

On foot, there are two options. The easy one is the 190-meter marked trail at the El Morro visitor area, opened in 2021, with rest stops and a lookout over Cayo Zapato and the beach. The harder one is the climb up the mesa itself. Guides and tour operators use a route known as the Sendero de las Cruces (Trail of the Crosses), which is short but steep through dry scrub, and the view from the top takes in the coast, the town and the cays. Go early: there is almost no shade and the heat builds fast. Wear proper shoes, carry water, and go with a guide if you are unsure of the route. Check current access rules at the visitor area, as the park is managed by the Ministry of Environment.

By boat, tours leave from Playa Juan de Bolaños, run along the base of the cliffs and around the back of El Morro, where the rock walls drop into the sea, and stop near Isla Cabra (also written Isla Cabrita), a small white-sand cay with a little lighthouse and coral nearby. Some boats stop for a swim or snorkel.

The packaged version on Civitatis combines the lookout and the boat ride in about 3 hours, from around $77 per person in 2026, with transport, the boat and a Spanish-speaking guide; it meets at the beach bungalows on Juan de Bolaños and is not open to children under 10. You can also arrange a boat directly with fishermen on the beach, which is usually cheaper for a group; settle the price and route before leaving.

Best time: early morning for both the climb and the sea, which is usually calmer before the wind picks up. Expect a wet ride back on windy afternoons.

Best for: active travelers, photographers and anyone visiting Montecristi for the first time. Not for: people with mobility issues on the summit climb, though the short trail and the boat are easy. Base yourself at the El Morro Eco Adventure Hotel for the earliest start, and finish with a swim at Playa El Morro.
