Hospiten Bávaro
The most established private hospital serving tourists in Punta Cana, with outpatient clinics inside many resorts
About Hospiten Bávaro
Hospiten Bávaro is the oldest and most established of the major private hospitals serving the Punta Cana tourist zone, and the one most all-inclusive resorts have direct relationships with through outpatient clinics located inside the resort property. For travelers who get sick or injured while staying at a Hospiten-affiliated resort, the path is usually to start at the resort's Hospiten clinic and only escalate to the main hospital if the situation requires it. The hospital itself is part of the international Hospiten group, which operates facilities across Mexico, the Caribbean, and Spain.
The main facility includes 70 in-patient beds, four operating theaters, an intensive care unit, a 24/7 emergency department, and over 50 medical specialties on staff. The infrastructure is modern enough to handle most medical situations short of highly specialized cardiac surgery or organ transplants, which require transfer to Santo Domingo. For routine emergencies (broken bones, severe allergic reactions, gastroenteritis, lacerations requiring surgery, hyperthermia, etc.) Hospiten Bávaro is competent and fast.
Language and tourist services are strong. The international department handles billing in USD or EUR, accepts most international insurance plans directly, and provides English, French, Italian, and Russian translation as needed. Many staff members speak conversational English; the international department coordinators speak fluently. For travelers without insurance, cash-pay rates are clearly posted and significantly cheaper than equivalent care in the US.
Access and arrival is straightforward. Most resort doctors will arrange transport via ambulance or hotel vehicle when an evacuation to the main hospital is needed. Walk-in emergency arrivals are accepted 24/7. The hospital is located on the main Verón to Punta Cana highway, central enough that ambulance transit times from any resort area are 10 to 30 minutes.
Who should go here: tourists with non-life-threatening but real medical needs (severe allergic reactions, suspected fractures, severe gastroenteritis, dive accidents requiring evaluation, etc.), guests at resorts with on-site Hospiten clinics needing escalation, and anyone with international insurance specifically partnered with Hospiten. Who should consider alternatives: travelers wanting the most modern facility with North American accreditation (Hospital IMG is the newer standard there), travelers seeking specifically English-language concierge service throughout (Centro Médico Punta Cana's international department is more comprehensive on that front).
