Cayo Arena (Cayo Paraíso)
A tiny sandbar ringed by coral off Punta Rucia, reached by speedboat through the mangroves
A low-key fishing-village beach with small hotels, boat captains and access to Cayo Arena
Punta Rucia Beach is the beach of the village itself, on the bay of La Isabela in Puerto Plata province, near the Montecristi line. It is a working beach: fishing boats anchored offshore, small guesthouses and restaurants close to the sand, and captains offering trips to Cayo Arena. If La Ensenada next door is where Dominican families spend the weekend, Punta Rucia is where you stay the night.
The water is generally calm, protected by the shape of the bay, and good for swimming close to shore. Clarity can be very good on still mornings. It is not a manicured resort beach: boats are moored along parts of the shore, so pick your spot away from the moorings if you want to swim.
Most visitors use the beach as a starting point. Boats to Cayo Arena take about 20 to 30 minutes, and hiring a fishing boat directly here or through your hotel lets you leave early and arrive at the sandbar before the big tour groups. Ask about adding the mangrove channels toward Estero Hondo, where manatees live, and settle the price, the number of hours and what is included before you get in the boat.
Food is simple and local: fried fish, rice, salad, tostones and cold beer, at small restaurants in and around the village. The village has no nightlife to speak of, and that is a selling point for most people who come.
Small hotels sit close to the beach. Hotel Sand Bay is a few steps from the sand, Corales Punta Rusia is about a five-minute walk away, and Punta Rucia Lodge is about an 18-minute walk. Expect simple rooms rather than resort service.
Getting here: from Santiago, take the Duarte highway west toward Montecristi and turn north at the Cruce de Villa Elisa, following signs to Punta Rucia; allow about 2 hours. From Puerto Plata, allow roughly 2 hours. Roads near the coast can be slow and potholed after rain.
Sargassum can arrive in heavy years, mostly April to September. Best for: travelers who want a quiet base with easy access to Cayo Arena and Playa La Ensenada. Not for: anyone wanting a resort day with chairs and beach service. More planning detail is in the Montecristi & Punta Rucia travel guide.
