Cayo Arena Boat Trip & Mangroves
Speedboat to the Cayo Arena sandbar for snorkeling, plus a run through the mangroves
About This Activity
The Cayo Arena trip is the classic excursion of the north-west: a speedboat ride from Punta Rucia or Playa La Ensenada to a tiny sandbar ringed by coral, a couple of hours of swimming and snorkeling, and a run through the mangrove channels on the way back. It is one of the most photographed day trips in the country, and you can do it either as a long organized tour from the Puerto Plata coast or as a short, cheaper trip if you are already in Punta Rucia.
The organized version starts with an early pickup in Puerto Plata, Sosúa or Cabarete, often around 7 a.m., and a drive of roughly 2 hours west. The boat crossing to the cay takes about 20 to 30 minutes. On the sandbar, vendors in thatched huts sell fruit and drinks, and snorkel gear is usually provided. Most tours then cruise through the mangroves, where manatees live, though you should treat a sighting as a bonus. Lunch, typically fish, chicken, rice and salad, is served at La Ensenada before the drive home. Total time runs about 8 to 11 hours.
Prices listed on major booking sites in 2026 ranged from about $65 per person for group tours with a Punta Rucia or Puerto Plata start, to around $89 to $100 with hotel pickup from Sosúa or Cabarete, and about $165 per person for private boats. Some operators only run on set days of the week. Check what is included: transport, boat, lunch, drinks and snorkel gear vary between companies.
If you are staying in Punta Rucia, skip the bus. Hire a boat directly at the beach or through your hotel, leave by 9 a.m., and you can have the cay nearly to yourself before the tour boats arrive. Agree on the price, the time on the cay and whether the mangroves are included before you set off.
What to bring: reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, water, cash for drinks and tips, and a dry bag. Do not stand on or touch the coral. Sundays are the busiest day. The crossing can be bumpy when the wind is up, which matters for small children, pregnant travelers and anyone with back problems.
Best for: snorkelers, couples, families with confident swimmers and anyone staying on the north coast who wants a full-day trip. Not for: travelers who dislike long bus rides; stay at Punta Rucia Lodge instead. Read the full Cayo Arena beach page and the Playa La Ensenada page before you go.
