Laguna Limón Horseback & Boat Tour
Ride along empty Playa Limón, then cross the lagoon by boat: the classic Miches countryside day
About This Activity
The full-day countryside tour around Laguna Limón is one of the most popular excursions in the Miches area, and the one that shows off the region's mix of beach, wetland and farmland in a single day. Formats vary by operator, but most combine a horseback ride, a boat or canoe trip across Laguna Limón and a ride along Playa Limón, often with a 4x4, buggy or quad leg and a Dominican lunch.
The highlight for most people is riding along Playa Limón: three kilometers of wild sand with coconut palms on one side and the Atlantic on the other, usually with nobody else in sight. The lagoon crossing is slower and calmer, through mangrove-lined water with herons and egrets. Some versions add a stop at Montaña Redonda.
Prices (approximate, 2026): tours from Miches with buggies, horses, the lagoon boat and lunch have been listed around $139 per person, full-day trips from Punta Cana with transfers from about $150, and longer private-style days with horses and 4x4s up to about $190 per adult. Some operators share horses or vehicles per couple, so check what you are paying for. Prices change often between operators and seasons.
From Punta Cana these are long days, around 8 to 9 hours with the drive, because El Cedro is about an hour and a half north of the main resort zone. From the Costa Esmeralda resorts the transfer is short and the day feels much easier.
What to know: the horses are working ranch horses and the pace is generally gentle, so beginners are fine, but ask about weight limits and helmets. Wear long trousers or leggings and closed shoes. Bring sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent and a change of clothes. The sea at Playa Limón is rough, so treat any beach stop as a walk and photo break rather than a swim.
Choose operators with recent reviews, clear inclusions and visible care for their horses. Avoid tours where animals look underfed or are worked in the midday heat.
Best for: active couples, families with kids old enough to ride, and anyone who wants a taste of rural Dominican life. Not for: travelers who dislike long days in the sun or have back problems that make riding uncomfortable.
