Playa Pedernales

About Playa Pedernales

Playa Pedernales is the town beach of Pedernales, the last Dominican town before the Haitian border. It is a long, wide stretch of sand facing the bay, walkable from most of the small hotels in town, and on a weekday you can have much of it to yourself. It is not the reason people make the long drive south (that is Bahía de las Águilas), but it is where you will end up in the evening, and it is a pleasant place to swim on the days you are not making the trip to the national park.

The water is clear and usually calm, with a sandy bottom. It is a local family beach rather than a tourist one: there are no resort loungers or water-sports operators, and no lifeguards. Sargassum is not usually an issue on this side of the country. Shade comes from the odd tree, so bring an umbrella if you plan to stay.

The best hour is sunset. The beach faces west over the bay, and the small malecón (seafront walk) fills up with people drinking a cold Presidente, playing dominoes and watching the light go. A few simple restaurants are in town within walking distance, and El Navío, a bar and seafood spot on the beach, has been named in recent guides as a pricier option. Most places are cash only, and Pedernales has a single bank branch whose ATM can run dry on weekends, so bring pesos from Barahona or Santo Domingo.

What to know before you go: Pedernales is remote and quiet. It is roughly 5 to 6 hours from Santo Domingo by road and about 2 to 2.5 hours from Barahona. Cell coverage is decent in town but drops out quickly outside it. The town is also changing: the Cabo Rojo tourism project is building a cruise port (already open), new hotels and an international airport nearby, with the first big hotel and the airport now expected in 2027. A boardwalk hotel announced for the town seafront has not been confirmed as open.

Best for: an easy swim close to your hotel, sunset, travelers who like small-town Dominican life. Not for: anyone looking for beach clubs, nightlife or organized activities. Pair it with Playa Cabo Rojo and Bahía de las Águilas, both within 30 minutes, and with the drive up to the Hoyo de Pelempito viewpoint. For places to stay, see our Pedernales neighborhood page.
