Playa Los Patos

A pebble beach at the mouth of one of the world's shortest rivers, with an icy freshwater lagoon in the shade

Playa Los Patos

About Playa Los Patos

Playa Los Patos is the river beach locals drive to on Sundays. A spring-fed river rises at the foot of the mountain and runs only a short distance (around 60 meters by most accounts, depending on the tide) through a shaded lagoon before it meets the sea, which is why it is often called one of the shortest rivers in the world. On one side you have a cold, crystal-clear freshwater pool under the trees; on the other, a long pebble beach and the open Caribbean. It is about 45 minutes to an hour south of Barahona, just past Paraíso.

The river lagoon is the swim. The water is cold and clear, wider and calmer than the pools at San Rafael, and shallow enough at the edges for kids. A wooden footbridge crosses to the far side. The sea is another matter: big waves often crash onto the steep pebble shore and swimming there is generally dangerous for casual swimmers. Surfers do ride it when conditions line up, and Los Patos made a Lonely Planet list of the Caribbean's best beaches. There are no lifeguards.

Facilities are better than most of this coast. A row of local restaurants lines the water and serves fried fish, rice and beans and tostones, with lunches around $8 to $12 in 2026. Recent visitors report clean public restrooms. Parking is a small cash fee, around RD$100 (about $2), paid to attendants. Local guaguas (minibuses) stop on the highway, but plan your ride back if you stay past about 4 p.m.

Crowds swing a lot. Weekday mornings are quiet, with the lagoon almost empty. Weekends and holidays bring families, bachata on the speakers and a party atmosphere until sunset, which is fun if that is what you want.

Best for: families (in the lagoon), anyone wanting a cold-water swim on a hot day, experienced surfers on the right swell. Not for: sea swimmers looking for calm water, or travelers wanting quiet on a Sunday. Wear water shoes. Sargassum can reach the beach in some months but the lagoon is unaffected. Combine with Playa San Rafael and Playa Paraíso, all within 15 minutes, or continue south toward Enriquillo and Pedernales.
